Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

: A mirror, reflecting a vase. Español: : Un e...

Today I’m giving homework.  That’s right.  This weekend I’m giving us an assignment.  I’m hoping since it’s the weekend you will actually take time to DO it.   So here it is:

pause and take notice of yourself

Yeah,  Self-Awareness.  Not to be confused with self-consciousness.  I don’t mean staring in the mirror to find flaws or to serve as a reminder you need a haircut.  Self-Awareness is something much deeper.  In fact, it requires discipline–taking moments to actually step away from the bustling world to get alone with God.

You see, we all face times of busyness where we get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of what it’s all about.  What is it all about?  What’s your purpose?  What’s God saying to YOU today?  What are your hopes? desires?

How did you spend your week?  Did it push you forward toward His purpose?  Are there things you need to confess as time wasters that pulled you back?

Are you taking time to fulfill your purpose or are you losing yourself in the day-to-day, consumed by things that, in the end, won’t really matter at all.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting–Psalm 139:23-24 NKJV

It’s so easy for us to deceive ourselves.  This weekend, let’s pause and take notice of where we’re heading.  That way, we can forge ahead with clarity, keeping our eye on the prize–keeping our eyes and hearts focused on our priority–becoming who God wants us to be to bring glory and honor to His name.

Love Notes

by Mitzi on May 17, 2012

the first page of the Gospel of Luke

I love to be caught off guard by scripture.  You know, those times when you’re reading and a verse just pops off the page screaming, “Hello! Here it is–that truth for YOU today!”

I recently had one of those moments while studying the book of Luke.  Well, just as I began reading the first few lines.

It seemed good to me also having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.–Luke 1:3-4 NKJV

It was the name that grabbed my attention.  Theophilus.  Besides the name being a mouthful, and fun to say, try it–what caught me off guard was that Luke wrote his famous gospel account with one specific man in mind.

I know.  We aren’t sure just who Theophilus is.  Some say he was a high priest who served around the same time period.  Some say he was a Roman official.  Others say Luke just made up the name entirely.

What I find most interesting, however, is the meaning.  Theophilus means, “friend of God” or “lovers of God.”

Are you a friend of God?  Do you love Him and His Word?  Then know that this book is written just for you.

Luke wanted the reader–that’s you and me–to know the truth.  So that we might know  with certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

Luke took great care to write an accurate account, giving us a play by play journey to the cross, so that we would know the TRUTH.

Today, read God’s Word with anticipation.  After all, it’s God’s love letter to you.

Are You Lonesome Tonight?

May 16, 2012

We all experience times in our lives when we feel alone.  Yet, should that feeling steal our happiness? A quick run through the Bible and we’ll find lots of people who also experienced times of loneliness, even in the midst of crowds of people. Joseph came from a large family, yet among his jealous brothers, [...]

If You’re Happy and You Know It

May 14, 2012

Abraham Lincoln once said, “A person will be just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” I agree.  We decide for ourselves happiness and in theory, it sounds simple enough.  However, what about in the midst of a catastrophe?  bad news?  or stressful situations?  Can we still keep ourselves in a [...]

Lovely to the Toes

May 9, 2012

Last night I had the privilege to speak for a few moments to the ladies of our church.  So today, I thought I’d share a little excerpt from what I called, Beauty Treatments. How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who brings glad tidings of good things! –Romans 10:15 [...]

I’m a Huge Newhart fan!

May 7, 2012

I love Bob Newhart–especially his 70s sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, where he plays a psychologist in the midst of some pretty interesting people.  This past Christmas, my son surprised me with the first two seasons (thanks, Caleb) and now our whole family’s hooked! However, my favorite sketch has to be this one, from MAD TV: [...]

As a rite of passage, everyone gets the Mark on their thirteenth birthday by taking the Pledge.   The Mark indicates citizenship, providing employment opportunities, housing, and basic necessities as well as pleasures of the society. Without it, you are identified as the Markless–an outcast, shunned, lost, and forgotten. Sound familiar? Logan Langly is only a [...]

Do You Really Want to Know?

May 3, 2012

I’m talking about the Tree.  The one in the garden that made the difference.  THE difference–between right and wrong, honor and shame, life and death. It had to be beautiful.  After all, it grew in the Garden of Eden, created by God’s own hand.  Plump fruit hung from its branches.  Apples?  Oranges?  Pomegranates?  Whatever it [...]

Paradise Lost

May 2, 2012

This month it’s Gardening 101. Today?  Let’s start at the beginning–the very beginning–in the very first garden where it all began.  The Garden of Eden. As Milton conveys in his lengthy poem, it certainly was paradise. Genesis 2:8-25 describes it.  No fear, no worries, no shame.  Talk  about enjoying life!  Can you even imagine?  The problem is, we [...]

I’ve been digging in the dirt. . .

May 1, 2012

sowing seeds in our vegetable garden–weeding flowerbeds–and tidying up the porch with a little scrubbing and a fresh coat of paint on flower containers to add a splash of color–spring has sprung! How about your garden?  After winter’s neglect, does it need some extra care? How about the soils of your heart?  God need to do [...]
